Here students give their words to another person and they call them aloud as they write and sort them into the correct Word Study categories. At the end they look at the words and correct the ones they misspelled. Finally they get their partner's signature which made them feel like Rock Stars (which they are!).
In Math Workshop, students are using an App on the Ipads called Explain Everything which allow users to explain their thinking step by step, record it, and share with other students. In doing so, students learn not only how to show their math work through numbers, pictures and words, but students learn how to collaborate and grow as mathematician by working together to solve the math.
Over the past few weeks in Reader's Workshop & Social Studies, Team 25 has been reading and learning about the wave of immigration to America in 1900s. Students were divided into research groups so as to become an expert on one of the following immigration subtopics: Reasons for Coming to America, Statue of Liberty, Ellis Island, Angel Island, and A New Life in America. To celebrate all our learning, students gave 10 minute presentations teaching the class all they know about their subtopic by creating posters, reading passages from primary sources, and displaying photographs/images. In all, these historians rock it and here's a slideshow to prove it. Way to go team! This week the class started our new Science unit called Exploring Earth's Material. Here, young geologist are observing and investigating various earth materials more closely while recording their data/thinking into their Scientist Notebooks. Stay tune for more Science Action!
This week, as part of our Serious Talk curriculum, the class continued our conversation about stereotypes and why people put "labels" on others, how they do not always fit their identity, and what we can do to stop them. As a result, a student in the classroom shared with me the YouTube video called, "I am NOT Black, You are NOT White" by Prince Ea who is a social-justice poet, activist. This powerful video helped make students more aware as to why our work towards dismantling racism and breaking stereotypes is so important to our learning and the world around us. Additionally, the students were so inspired video that they wrote their own anti-stereotype poems entitled, "Just Because" proclaiming who they are proud to be!
Strike up the band! The New England Brass Quartet came to perform for the Fourth Graders today as well as to teach them about the amazing brass instrument family. The students were enthralled with their beautiful playing and laughed at all their silly jokes. One lucky Team 25 member got to play in their closing song.
As a result of being respectful and engaging students during a guidance lesson, I am excited to announce that Team 25 won the Bowman Big Bear to visit our classroom this week! Check out the Big Bear Blog daily to see all the fun things he will be learning from our amazing students.
Great Job Team! Way to go Grade 4 Spring Concert Singers! Your voices and performances were beautiful which, I know you all worked very hard to learn. Keep up the great music!
